Soit Le Motonyi: Home of Big Cats in Serengeti

About Soit Le Motonyi

Mawe Camp is located in the Central-East Serengeti area of Soit Le Motonyi, where the southern short grass plains meet the acacia woodland. The underground Ngare Nanyuki River, which passes right in front of Mawe Camp, creates pockets of permanent water that attract abundant wildlife all year around.

Conservation Efforts:

This area has gained prominence for its conservation efforts focused on the cheetah population, leading to these magnificent creatures’ resurgence in their natural habitat.

It is the unique landscape in Africa, the vast treeless, short-grass plains of the Serengeti, studded with the finest of granite outcrops, the kopjes of Gol, Sametu, Maasai, and Barafu.

The area was closed to visitors for 20 years to conduct cheetah research and conservation, allowing the ecosystem to recover from the past disturbance of human activities.
During this time, the plains became a haven for cheetahs, allowing them to thrive and establish their presence again. This deliberate conservation approach turned Soit Le Motonyi Plains into a sanctuary for cheetahs and other wildlife.

Now the site is open again to the public, and we are lucky to have our camp in this area.

Soit Le Motonyi has probably the highest density of cheetahs in Serengeti, comparable to most areas of Serengeti.
The open grasslands and savannah of Soit Le Motonyi Plains provide an ideal environment for various animals, making it a prime destination for safari enthusiasts and nature photographers.
Visitors can witness lions, leopards, hyenas, elephants, giraffes, buffalos, and numerous antelope species besides cheetahs. The area is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with an assortment of avian species adding to the vibrant tapestry of life.

The Great Migration:

The wildebeest and zebra flood the area between November and January on their way to the southern Serengeti/Ndutu and April and May on their northern Journey to Mara River/Western Corridor. During this time, Mawe Camp is the center stage for dramatic action as the big cats have a veritable feast with abundant prey!

Sometimes, it is your private Eden where you can experience tremendous big cat sightings or enjoy the beautiful Serengeti landscape sipping your sundowner on the Soit Le Motonyi plains.

Mawe Camp is a luxury camp with lovely accommodations, excellent cuisine, and fabulous game viewing. The guests at Mawe Camp enjoy an exclusive safari in their private paradise!
