What is the best month to visit Lake Eyasi?

July, August and September are the most reliable for a cultural visit. You get cool dry dawns, a firm road from Karatu and easy walking. February is a good middle option. It is dry enough for access, with a better chance of some water on the lake for birds.

When can you see flamingos at Lake Eyasi?

When the lake holds water, which is most likely from the November short rains through May. The flamingos follow the water, and the water follows the rain. Bear in mind that the lake is unpredictable year to year, so a full lake is never guaranteed even in a wet month.

Can you visit Lake Eyasi in the rainy season?

You can. The green months bring a fuller lake and greener country, and the walks still go ahead. The main caution is the road, which softens in the long rains of March and April. Allow more time for the transfer, and an earlier start.

Do you need to stay overnight at Lake Eyasi?

No. Lake Eyasi is a half-day trip, about forty five minutes from a Karatu base. Most people visit on a pre-sunrise walk and return for breakfast. There is no need to move lodges. That is why it pairs so easily with a Ngorongoro or Lake Manyara day.

Is the Hadzabe hunt available all year?

Yes. The Hadzabe live around the lake permanently, so the dawn walk runs in every month. What changes with the season is the drive in and the comfort of the morning, not whether the walk happens. The early start matters more than the calendar.

How long do you need at Lake Eyasi?

Half a day. A pre-dawn departure, the Hadzabe walk and a Datoga forge visit fill a morning. You are back at the lodge by late morning. It is an add-on to a northern circuit trip. It does not fill a day on its own.
