What is the best month to visit Tarangire?

September. The country outside the park has been dry for months by then, so the herds are concentrated on the river, the grass is short and the roads are firm. August, meanwhile, gives the same conditions with more vehicles. June and October give slightly weaker game viewing, and June adds lower rates.

Is Tarangire worth visiting in the green season?

For birds, yes. The migrants arrive with the rain and November to April gives the fullest bird list, on green ground with very few vehicles. For big herds it is the weaker half of the calendar, because much of the wildlife has moved to dispersal areas outside the park.

What is the wettest month in Tarangire?

April, inside the long rains that the Tanzania Meteorological Authority dates from March to May. Rain usually comes as an afternoon storm rather than all day, so morning drives generally go ahead. TANAPA recommends a four-wheel drive vehicle across the wet season, which it dates November to May.

When do the elephants come back to the Tarangire River?

From about June, as the temporary water outside the park dries up. The concentration builds through July and August and holds until the short rains arrive in November. Foley and Faust recorded the same pattern across a long-term study inside the park, so it is consistent rather than a one-off.

Which months are busiest in Tarangire?

July to October, with a second burst over the Christmas and New Year holidays. In contrast, April and May are the emptiest weeks, and June and November are the two shoulder windows either side of the peak. Lake Manyara follows a similar calendar if you are pairing the two.

Are there cheaper months to visit Tarangire?

March to June and November to 21 December, when our rates drop to the low band, $62 per person per night below peak. May is the cheapest week-for-week and also the emptiest. November buys the same rate with better game viewing, because the herds have not fully dispersed yet.
