About Mawe Lodges
Five camps and lodges in northern Tanzania
Mawe Lodges is a collection of luxury tented camps and lodges in northern Tanzania. We have five properties, in Karatu, Tarangire, Ndutu and the Serengeti.
Each one is close to the wildlife you come to see. For example, Karatu Tented Lodge is 30 minutes from the Ngorongoro Crater rim, and Gnu Mara River Camp is 40 to 45 minutes from the Mara River.
Who We Are
We are not a large hotel group, and we have never wanted to be.
Mawe Lodges is a Tanzanian-owned company with five tented camps and lodges on the northern safari circuit. Our head office is in Njiro, Arusha. Our properties are in Karatu, Tarangire, Ndutu in the south, the central Serengeti and Kogatende in the far north.
Each of our camps has around eight to ten tents, and we keep them small on purpose. A small camp stays calm, and our team has time for every guest. It also keeps our footprint on the land light, so the bush around you still feels wild.
Sustainability
Sustainability We Can Show You
Mawe Lodges was among the first accommodations on the Tanzanian mainland to earn the Travelife Accommodation Sustainability Certification. We did not pay for a badge. Instead, the certification checks how we buy supplies, how we travel, how we handle waste and energy, and how we treat the people who work with us.
In practice, this means solar power, local building materials and buying from suppliers in the districts around our camps. We publish our sustainability policy, our yearly sustainability report and our activity code of conduct. We also work with TANAPA as a conservation partner, and we support education, health and community projects near our camps.
Our Team
A Tanzanian team in every camp
Each Mawe camp has its own Tanzanian team, and they look after one camp of eight to ten tents. Because the camps are small, you see the same people from the day you arrive until the day you leave.
That team looks after your tent, your meals and your plans for the day. At Karatu Tented Lodge, this means the pool, the restaurant and the barbecue in the garden. In our Serengeti camps, it means an early breakfast before you head out and a packed lunch if you stay out all day.
Every camp is also a base for activities. We arrange game drives, walking safaris, sunrise balloon flights, biking around Karatu and night drives in Tarangire. You can add these to your stay, or ask us to plan a full safari around our camps.
Value
Boutique, luxury and authentic usually arrive with a price tag to match.
We took that as a design problem rather than a given. Our rates include accommodation, three meals a day and Wi-Fi in the main areas. Game drives, park fees and transfers are charged separately, and we give you a full written breakdown of these costs before you book. No guesswork, no discoveries at check-out.
That is our approach. You stay in a small, comfortable camp close to the wildlife, and you know the full bill before you arrive.
