Karatu Safari

A Karatu safari gives you the best of northern Tanzania. The town sits in the Ngorongoro Highlands, right outside the crater gate. From here, you can reach four major parks within a short drive. Most travelers pass through Karatu without knowing what they miss.
Karatu itself is a lively farming town with red soil, coffee estates, and forested hills. The Iraqw people have farmed these slopes for generations. Meanwhile, the Hadzabe, one of Africa’s last hunter gatherer tribes, live near Lake Eyasi to the south. Few safari stops offer this much culture beside the wildlife.

Our Karatu Tented Lodge sits just outside town. Our guides drive these roads every day. In this guide, we cover what to do in Karatu, park distances, costs, and how to plan your stay.

Why Karatu

Why Karatu Is the Best Safari Base in Northern Tanzania

Karatu solves the biggest problem on the Northern Circuit: cost. Lodges on the crater rim charge premium rates for the view. In contrast, Karatu lodges offer gardens, pools, and warm nights at a fraction of the price.
Location is the second reason. The Loduare Gate to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area sits about 15 km from town. Therefore, guests in Karatu can still reach the crater floor early in the morning.
Comfort is the third. The rim sits above 2,200 m, so nights there get cold and misty. Karatu sits lower, around 1,500 m. As a result, evenings stay mild, and you sleep better between game drives.
Finally, Karatu has life of its own. You can tour a coffee farm, hike to a waterfall, or wander the market. A safari here is more than a drive between parks.
Getting Here

Where Is Karatu and How Do You Get There?

Karatu lies in the Arusha Region of northern Tanzania, on the paved highway to the Serengeti. Most visitors fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport, about an hour east of Arusha. From Arusha, the drive to Karatu takes around 2.5 hours.
The road passes Mto wa Mbu and climbs the Rift Valley wall past Lake Manyara. The views along this stretch are worth the window seat. Alternatively, you can fly to the Lake Manyara airstrip, roughly 30 minutes from town by road.
We arrange all transfers from Arusha, the airport, or the airstrip. So you only need to land, and we handle the rest.
Things to Do

Things to Do in Karatu

Ngorongoro Crater Day Trip

The crater is the main draw, and Karatu is the ideal launch point. Our vehicles leave before sunrise and enter the gate as it opens. You then spend a full day among lions, elephants, and black rhinos. Read our complete Ngorongoro Crater safari guide for fees, wildlife, and timing.

Lake Eyasi: Meet the Hadzabe and Datoga

Lake Eyasi lies about an hour south of Karatu. The Hadzabe people still live by hunting and foraging, much as their ancestors did. On a morning visit, you join them as they track game with handmade bows.

Nearby, Datoga families work as herders and metal smiths. You can watch them forge arrowheads and bracelets from scrap metal. Consequently, many guests call this morning the most memorable part of their trip.

Coffee Farm Tours

Karatu's volcanic soil grows some of Tanzania's best arabica coffee. Several estates around town open their gates for walking tours. You follow the bean from tree to roaster, then taste a fresh cup. The tour takes two to three hours and suits all ages.

Elephant Caves and Endoro Waterfall Hike

The Endoro Nature Trail starts on the forested edge of the conservation area. A guided hike leads to caves that elephants dig with their tusks for mineral rich soil. Further up, the trail reaches a tall waterfall. Buffalo and elephant tracks often cross the path, so an armed ranger walks with you.

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara sits around 30 minutes from Karatu, at the base of the Rift Valley wall. The park is famous for tree climbing lions, big elephant herds, and flocks of flamingos. A half day drive here pairs well with an afternoon at the lodge pool.

Village Walks, Bike Rides, and the Market

Guided walks through Karatu's farmland show daily Iraqw life. You pass brick kilns, barley fields, and family homesteads. Cyclists can ride quiet farm tracks with a local guide.

In addition, Karatu hosts a large open market. Twice a month, the Mnada livestock market draws traders from across the highlands. It is loud, colorful, and completely real.

The green season runs from November to May. Short rains fall in November, and long rains peak in April and May. The hills turn deep green, crowds thin out, and rates drop. Furthermore, the nearby Ndutu calving season peaks from December to March, an easy add on from Karatu.
Good to Know

Practical Tips

Bring layers. Highland mornings feel cool, yet afternoons turn warm and sunny. Closed shoes help on hikes and dusty streets.
Carry some Tanzanian shillings for the market and small purchases. Most lodges accept cards and US dollars, but stalls do not.
Ask before photographing people, especially in villages and at the market. A polite request, or a small purchase first, opens most doors.
Malaria risk exists across northern Tanzania, so speak with your doctor before travel. Finally, most nationalities need a Tanzania visa, which you can apply for online.
