Luxury Safari in Tanzania

A luxury safari in Tanzania means space, privacy and service, with a small camp close to the wildlife rather than a large hotel far from it. It is about the quality of the guiding, the size of the camp, and how near you sleep to the animals, more than marble floors or gold taps.
Our approach is simple. We own and run our camps, our guides and our vehicles, so one team looks after you from arrival to departure.

What is luxury

What makes a safari in Tanzania luxury?

Luxury on safari does not come from chandeliers. It comes from four things you feel every day. First, space and privacy, because each camp holds ten tents, not forty rooms. Second, private guiding, so your vehicle and guide are yours for the day. Third, location, because a camp inside the park puts you minutes from the wildlife. Fourth, service, with full board dining and a team that stays small.

A luxury safari in Tanzania built this way gives you more time with animals and fewer people around you.

Our difference

The Mawe luxury safari difference

We have owned and run our camps since 2014, across the northern circuit. We employ our own guides and keep our own 4×4 vehicles, rather than hiring them in for each trip. That setup is the reason the quality holds from your first game drive to your last. Our work has earned Travelife Gold for sustainability and a TripAdvisor Travellers Choice award for 2026. You can read about every property on our camps and lodges page.

Accommodation

Luxury safari accommodation in Tanzania

Our accommodation is tented camps, not walled hotels. Each camp has ten en-suite tents on raised platforms, with proper beds, plumbed bathrooms and full board dining. Three of our camps are inside the Serengeti, one is inside Tarangire, and one is on the Rift Valley escarpment near Karatu. To compare them by region and season, see our Serengeti safari camps guide.

Where to go

Where to go on a luxury safari in Tanzania

The northern circuit holds the parks most luxury safaris cover. The Serengeti brings the great migration and the big cats. Ngorongoro holds the crater and its dense wildlife. Tarangire is known for elephants and baobab country. Lake Manyara and Lake Eyasi add birdlife and culture to a longer trip. Each park has its own page with the detail. For a full overview, see our best places to visit in Tanzania guide.

Activities

Luxury safari activities

Days on a luxury safari are built around private game drives in your own 4×4. A hot air balloon safari lifts off at dawn over the plains. Walking safaris put you on foot with an armed ranger. In Tarangire, night drives reach animals the day misses. Cultural visits and photography add to a longer stay. See how game drives work for the full detail.

Who it suits

Who a luxury safari in Tanzania suits

A luxury safari works for couples, families and small private groups who want comfort and flexibility. Honeymooners take a private tent and a slower pace. Families use our family tents and shorter days. Private groups can book a camp and a vehicle for their own use. Each of these has its own guide: our honeymoon safari, family safari and private safari pages.

Best time

Best time for a luxury safari in Tanzania

There is no single best month, only different ones. The dry season from June to October brings the Mara River crossings and easy game viewing. The green season from November to May has fewer visitors, lower rates and newborn animals in the south. Your camp changes with the season. For the full breakdown, see our best time to visit Tanzania guide.

Cost

How much does a luxury safari in Tanzania cost?

Our full board rates start from $101 per person per night at Karatu Tented Lodge, and from $182 at our Serengeti and Tarangire camps. Park fees, drinks, activities and transfers are extra. Planning

Planning and booking your luxury safari

You can plan your trip two ways. Book a single camp for a short stay, or chain several camps into a full safari that follows the wildlife. We handle the guide, the vehicle, the park logistics and the internal flights. For sample routes, see our Tanzania safari itineraries.
