Full board vs game package is a question about what you are buying. A full-board camp rate usually covers the room and daily meals. A game package adds agreed safari services, which can include guiding, game drives and transfers. The written inclusion list matters more than the label.
At Mawe, you can book a camp stay or arrange a complete safari. A room rate and a trip price therefore describe different purchases. Neither should be compared with the other without checking the services around the stay.
Full board vs game package at a glance
| Service | Full-board camp rate | Game package or complete safari |
|---|---|---|
| Room or tent | The booked room and nights | The booked room and nights |
| Daily meals | Usually breakfast, lunch and dinner | Meals as stated in the itinerary |
| Safari guide and vehicle | Do not assume these are part of the room rate | Check the stated guiding and vehicle arrangement |
| Game drives | Often a separate service or supplied by your tour operator | Check the number, timing and whether shared or private |
| Airstrip or airport transfers | Check separately | Check each agreed transfer |
| Park and conservation charges | Often quoted separately | Check the exact charges the proposal covers |
| Drinks and optional activities | Check the list | Check the list; the label does not settle it |
These are booking questions rather than universal definitions that every operator applies in the same way. A complete road-safari proposal can include a private vehicle and guide while using full-board accommodation at each camp. That does not make the camp’s room-only rate a guided safari price.
What full board means at a safari camp
Full board describes the accommodation meal plan. It usually means breakfast, lunch and dinner with your overnight stay. The camp’s published rate should explain its own included items and any limits.
Mawe’s camps and lodges information separates accommodation rates from park fees and additional services. If you book a camp directly, confirm whether you also need a transfer, vehicle and guide. Those arrangements do not appear automatically because the tent has a full-board rate.
Guests on a road safari may arrive with their tour operator’s guide and vehicle. Their game drives can therefore form part of the tour booking while the camp supplies the room and meals. The overall trip may be fully arranged even though the accommodation line says full board.
That distinction prevents double payment. If your tour already provides the vehicle and guide, adding another package of camp-operated drives may duplicate a service. On the other hand, booking only a room when you have no ground arrangements can leave an obvious part of the safari missing.
For the food itself, our food on safari article explains the camp dining context. Meal-plan terminology does not tell you whether a particular dietary request has reached the kitchen.
What a game package can include
A game package combines accommodation with specified safari activities or ground services. At one camp, that may mean scheduled shared game drives. Another proposal may include a private guide and vehicle for your booking party.
The phrase does not tell you how many drives you receive, whether the vehicle is shared, or what happens on arrival and departure days. Those details need to appear in the inclusion list.
Ask whether the guide remains with you throughout the trip or changes at each camp. For travelers who want a particular photography schedule, a private vehicle can make a material difference. For others, a scheduled shared drive may suit the visit. Neither arrangement should be left to guesswork.
Our game-drive page describes the activity. A quote still needs to connect that activity with the dates, camp and vehicle you are booking. Optional walks, balloon flights and night drives are separate questions even when they appear on the camp’s activity list.

Is all-inclusive the same thing?
All-inclusive usually signals a broader service list, but it is not a reliable promise that every expense disappears. Operators can exclude particular drinks, specialist activities, flights, gratuities or personal purchases.
The useful comparison is between written items. If one package includes drinking water and another includes a wider drinks selection, record that difference. Do the same for transfers, park charges and activity schedules.
Do not describe every Mawe stay as all-inclusive. A full-board camp booking and a complete private safari need their own inclusion lists. If a service is not in the agreement, the label alone does not confirm it.
How Mawe camp bookings and complete safaris differ
A camp booking gives you the named accommodation and meal arrangement for the dates you reserve. Additional services can be arranged, but the proposal needs to say which ones you have purchased.
A complete safari combines the overnight stays with the agreed route and ground services. Mawe uses its own guides and safari vehicles, and the plan can connect several of our properties. Flights can also form part of the arrangement where the itinerary calls for them.
For a private Tanzania safari, check that the proposal gives your booking party a dedicated guide and vehicle. This is different from private use of the whole camp. Other guests may share camp facilities and other vehicles may attend a sighting.
At Karatu Tented Lodge, for example, a full-board room can be your base for a park visit. The room booking does not by itself reserve a vehicle for that visit. A day-trip or complete-safari quote makes the extra services explicit.
The itinerary collection shows multi-day routes. Read each route’s own inclusion list rather than applying the terms from one itinerary to another.
Park fees, concession charges and transfers
Park-entry charges and accommodation costs are separate types of expense. The relevant authority sets park or conservation charges. The camp or safari company confirms which charges it collects or includes in your proposal.
A quote should identify the visits and nights it covers. A transfer through a conservation area, a crater visit and an overnight park stay can have different charging consequences. A general statement that park fees are included is less useful than a list connected to your route.
The park-fee guide gives further background. Actual current amounts need the applicable authority schedule and your booking details, including the travelers and dates. Do not apply an old figure from a different route.
Transfers need the same precision. An airstrip pickup is not an international airport transfer, and an outward pickup does not necessarily cover the return. Name each airport or airstrip and the camp or hotel at the other end.
Compare two quotes on the same basis
Start with the same dates, number of guests and room arrangements. Then list the services both proposals include. A difference in the vehicle arrangement can matter more than a small difference in the room rate.
| Comparison point | What to put beside each quote |
|---|---|
| Accommodation | Property name, room type and number of nights |
| Meals | First and last included meal, plus packed meals where needed |
| Vehicle | Private or shared, and the days available |
| Guiding | Included guide, activities and any separate local service |
| Flights | Exact flight legs and baggage conditions |
| Transfers | Every pickup and drop-off |
| Authority charges | Park, conservation and crater charges applicable to the route |
| Remaining costs | Drinks, optional activities, personal expenses and gratuities |
Suppose your party already has a guide and vehicle for the road itinerary. A full-board camp stay may fit that arrangement. A second camp game package could add drives you do not need. Confirm whether the package can change before comparing the final totals.
If you arrive by air without a vehicle, the same full-board room may need ground services added. A larger total can still be the more complete quote. It is not possible to judge value from the accommodation line alone.
Our Tanzania safari cost breakdown explains the wider price components. The comparison here helps you check the scope before accepting the amount.
Which arrangement fits your trip?
Full board can suit a camp stay within a road safari that already has guiding and transport. It can also suit someone booking the extra services individually, provided the reservations are complete before arrival.
A game package or complete safari can suit guests who want the camp, transport and wildlife activities arranged together. It still needs a clear answer about private or shared drives. A family hoping to shorten a drive, or a photographer hoping to wait at one sighting, should settle that detail early.
Traveling between several camps introduces another question. A guide and vehicle that follow the road route can create continuity, while flying between regions may need separate ground arrangements at each camp. The itinerary should show who looks after you at every stage.
Meal-plan and safari-package questions
Does full board include game drives?
A full-board camp rate should not be assumed to include drives. A complete tour can combine full-board accommodation with a guide and vehicle supplied through the tour booking. Check the room-rate inclusions and the wider safari proposal separately.
Does a game package guarantee a private vehicle?
No. It may use scheduled shared activities or a private arrangement. The written proposal should identify which applies to your party. A private room or tent does not itself establish the game-drive vehicle arrangement.
Are park fees included?
Only where the quote says so. Ask which charges apply to the named parks, conservation areas, nights and crater visit. An accommodation rate alone cannot confirm the fees for the complete route.
Are drinks included with meals?
Check the camp’s list. Water, tea or coffee can have different treatment from bar drinks, and one package may differ from another. Dietary arrangements also need advance confirmation; a full-board label does not communicate a specific request to the kitchen.
Can a full-board guest use a packed lunch?
Ask the team to arrange it around your outing and departure time. The meal plan and daily itinerary should agree so the kitchen knows when you will be away from camp. The final service list, rather than a broad rate label, defines what your booking covers.
